Horn and Whistle

Latest News and Events

Keep up with the latest aspects of Horn & Whistle Magazine on this page, which is updated frequently. (This page last updated on 4 17 08.)

We began mailing the new issue, # 118 of Horn & Whistle on Wednesday, April 16th.

Subsequent mailings will occur on the 17th and 18th as the magazines are arriving in separate shipments from the printer.

Those of you who get your magazines via first class mail should receive them by April 24th. Those of you get them via bulk mail will get your copies anywhere from ten days to five weeks from the above date. The typical wait time for bulk mail for H&W is three weeks from the mailing date.
Work is already beginning on the following issue, # 119. It is true...a publisher's work is never done!

Changed your Address? Then let us know!

If you have recently moved, be sure to let us know so that you won't miss any issues. Every so often we get E-mails from people wondering where their magazines are, and then when we ask a few questions we hear, "Oh. I guess I didn't let you know my new address." Because the majority of the copies that we mail to USA subscribers go out by bulk mail, there is no forwarding as there is with first class. If you have moved and are no longer there to get your magazine, you will lose that issue. So be sure to let us know right away if you have any type of address change, even if you just move to a different PO box at the same post office.

BACK ISSUES

Many of you have asked about the availability of back issues of Horn & Whistle. Because this publication began in 1982, it has been around for twenty-six years. Very recently, a long-term member of the HWEG generously consented to donate his entire collection of Horn & Whistle, beginning with the very first page through the present issue to the HWEG. Previously we had started to produce PDFs of some back issues, but many of those were copies of issues, and as you know, a quarter of a century ago, modern computer graphics technologies either did not exist or were not as advanced as they are now; meaning that some of the early copies of copies were not of the best quality. Fixing these and improving legibility were therefore very daunting tasks. But now, with this gift of original copies of every issue, we can produce very nice copies of back issues.
Of course the issues from 101 through the present are available, as these are all fairly recent and all of the computer files of these issues exist in two computers and also on several CDs, which allows easy conversion to PDFs whenever somebody wants one, but getting the early issues from 1982 on has been an entirely different matter. Also, there was a time that this magazine had a very small circulation and at one point consisted only of a few extra pages in another publication entirely. So you can see how getting access to or reproducing many of the original back issues has been a problem. We will have more information about this project very soon, but we at H&W are very pleased to have this new opportunity to preserve and soon make available the entire collection of H&W from issue # 1 to the present.

             Back Issues Update (4 / 16 / 08)

The process is underway. As of today, back issues #92 through #100 are converted into PDFs. Issues #1 - 10 are also in PDF format, but these first ten were in many cases made from copies of copies and the quality is not always as good as we would like. We're going to redo these later. But the new PDFs and masters that we are making now look much nicer. We should have issues #90 - #100 available on a CD within the next week. We're also considering making printed ten-issue paper copies for those who would prefer a bound paper volume instead of a PDF file to read on a computer. More info on this project very soon. Average time to process one issue into a PDF file is approximately one full day, as the pages still need some tweaking in order to look really nice. But for those of you who have so often expressed an interest in seeing the earlier issues of this publication which began in 1982, this is the answer. When this project is complete, you'll be able to purchase PDFs or paper copies of every issue of H&W and trace its evolution from its inception to the present. You'll also be able to get individual copies if you are missing an issue or two.

BOOT

HILL 2008!

This event, one of the Horn & Whistle community's biggest, is always a complete success! In the previous issue of Horn & Whistle, No. 116, we had  complete coverage of this great event, and now is not any too soon to begin planning for Boot Hill 2008! Hope to see you there! In the current issue #117, Harry Barry gives us his account of the Boot Hill 2007 event. Having several people contributing their impressions and pictures gives you a really comprehensive look at this event.  Stay tuned! We'll have a detailed flyer of the 2008 Boot Hill Event posted on this site soon.

Read Three Horn & Whistle Articles

Click Here to read an article which appeared in one of the recent issues of Horn & Whistle. This article, which tells you about Gamewell diaphone horns and details their operating principle appeared in H&W # 114. This is a representative example of what you can find in the pages of Horn & Whistle Magazine.

Click Here to read a safety-related article by Frank McCarthy about compressed air receivers. If you're an active horn and whistle enthusiast, you probably have a compressed air system for sounding your prized treasures. But are you using the right kind of a tank for your compressed air? Read this article which tells you exactly what to look for to make sure that your compressed air storage vessel is the right and safe kind to use.

Click Here to read an article about a companion technology to the RR steam whistle, the RR Pocket watch. This article contains many interesting diagrams and photos through a microscope of actual watch mechanisms, some disassembled for repair.

Horn & Whistle Fun Pages

This began as a little diversion project and also an experiment as I continued learning about web design. But after a while, I pretty much left it alone although I did include three JavaScript powered puzzles. But recently I've started playing around with the fun pages again, now that I am learning Flash animation in more detail. Check out the latest, a Flash virtual carillon. If you like music, you'll enjoy this little interactive page in which you can play tunes from a virtual keyboard right on your screen. You'll find it HERE! And, if you like to laugh, [and who doesn't] then you need to check out our puns and jokes, and also you will enjoy the "talented cat", a new Flash presentation that seems to make everyone laugh who has seen it so far.

New E-zine Option Possibility

Due to an almost complete lack of interest, this project is on indefinite hold. Not forgotten, but not high priority any longer unless more people come forth and express an interest in it.

LATEST NEWS FLASH on H&W Ezine option. Disregard above sentence! Looks there may be some interest in this after all, so, for me, it's back to the drawing board (computer actually) to see how we can make this happen. Stay posted. We'll put latest updates on the E-Zine project right here.

New "Confuser" for H&W

"Confuser?" what's that? It's what we call a computer, because there always seem to be things about computers that produce an element of confusion, at least for a while. Anyhow, in a month of so, Horn & Whistle will get a new computer for producing the magazines. This will help us with the production process and also make it possible to receive more article submissions as well as graphics as we continue to upgrade all aspects of H&W. It seems only a short while ago that the machine we presently use was new, but in the fast-paced world of computer technology advances, computers quickly become relics. What was hailed as the latest and greatest just a few short years ago is today's sunset technology, outdated and "kludgy" by present standards. But there are some who continue to hold onto some real computer relics, machines that are over ten years old. I have one good friend who is still very happy with his 486 that runs Windows 3.1 and uses a prehistoric dot-matrix printer.
